About Nonogram (Picross)

Nonogram β€” also known as Picross, Paint by Numbers, or Griddlers β€” is a classic picture-logic puzzle where you reveal a hidden pixel-art image by using number clues along the rows and columns. Each clue tells you the length of the consecutive filled cells in that line, and by combining the horizontal and vertical hints you deduce exactly which squares to fill and which to leave empty. It is an outstanding workout for logical deduction, concentration, and pattern recognition.

Basic Rules & How to Play

  • Read the Clues: Numbers at the start of each row and column tell you the size of each block of filled cells, in order. For example, "2 1" means a block of 2 cells, then a gap of at least one empty cell, then a block of 1 cell.
  • Fill the Cells: Tap or click a cell to fill it. Fill only the cells that must belong to a block.
  • Mark Empty Cells: Cross out cells that are guaranteed to be empty β€” they act as separators between blocks.
  • Reveal the Picture: When every line is solved correctly, the filled cells form a complete pixel-art image.

Game Modes

  • Single Player: Solve hand-crafted nonograms at your own pace, from tiny 5x5 warm-ups to massive 25x25 masterworks.

Core Solving Strategies

  • Edge overlap: When a block plus the minimum gaps exceeds half the line length, some cells in the middle are guaranteed filled. Mark them first β€” they are the foundation of every solve.
  • Count from both ends: For each clue, count the line from the left and from the right. Cells that are filled in both counts are definitely part of the block.
  • Use the crosses: Empty cells are just as informative as filled ones. Crossing out guaranteed empties splits the line into independent segments, making the remaining clues easier to place.
  • Work corner to corner: Start from rows and columns with the longest or most distinctive clues β€” they constrain the board fastest.
  • Take breaks on big puzzles: On 20x25+ grids, recheck every line after each few moves. One wrong cell at this size can waste many minutes.
